Network Analysis

Representation of the characters' relationships

Network analysis (NA) is a set of integrated techniques to depict relations among actors and to analyze the social structures that emerge from the recurrence of these relations.
To stress the importance of the relationships between the characters, which are the center of gravity of a play's structure, we have decided to implement three different graphs for this purpose.
A network is made of vertices and edges; a plot, of characters and actions: by clicking on a node, it is possible to isolate the its connections with the other nodes through a series of edges.
This transposition of the texts in a visual representation aims at giving a new dimension to the plays, by creating a new reality for them. By quoting Franco Moretti:

Four hours of action, that become this. Time turned into space: a character-system arising out of many character-spaces. [From Distant Reading by Franco Moretti p. 215]
